CPAP with Purpose:

Supporting Babies in the Delivery Room and the NICU (Part 1)

Dr. Cindy McEvoy joins The Incubator Podcast to discuss her research on extended CPAP use in preterm infants. She shares findings from randomized trials showing that an additional two weeks of CPAP may enhance lung growth and improve early respiratory outcomes, offering a simple, evidence-based approach with potential long-term benefits.

New method for improving lung growth and function in preterm infants

An OHSU clinical trial led by Dr. Cindy McEvoy found that extending CPAP therapy by two weeks in stable preterm infants significantly improves lung growth and function. Published in AJRCCM, the study showed larger lung volumes, better gas exchange, and less wheezing in infancy, suggesting that a simple adjustment to standard NICU care may improve lifelong respiratory health.

Study on Environmental Impact on Children’s Health

OHSU has received a $2 million NIH ECHO grant to study how environmental exposures affect children’s respiratory health. Led by Dr. Cindy McEvoy, the research will follow children through age 21 to examine the impacts of smoke exposure, e-cigarettes, marijuana, and climate change on lung development, asthma, and long-term respiratory outcomes.
