Every Breath Matters

Researching early-life interventions to improve lung health.

Who We Are

We are a collaborative research team led by Dr. Cynthia McEvoy, focused on improving lung health from before birth through early childhood. We've followed over 500 families across 19 years to understand how early interventions can change the course of a child's respiratory health — and to find simple, effective ways to make a difference.

Our Research Agenda

We study how a child's lungs develop — starting before birth and continuing through early childhood — and look for ways to intervene early to prevent breathing problems later in life. Our research focuses especially on babies born prematurely and children whose mothers smoked or had obesity during pregnancy, as these factors can affect how lungs grow and function.

To do this, we run randomized clinical trials, perform specialized lung function tests in infants, and collaborate on studies with non-human primates. Our goal is to find safe, simple, and effective ways to give every child the best possible start for lifelong lung health.
